Macedonia was torn by civil war when Alexander's father, Philip II, came to power. During his reign, Philip II united the country and conquered all of Greece. Alexander gained his father's skills by fighting alongside him. Philip II was stabbed at his daughter's wedding by an assassin brandishing a dagger. Alexander was only 20. Some say that both Alexander and his mother were behind the murder. After the assassination, Alexander told the crowd to remain calm because nothing had changed but the name of the king.

The great King Darius ruled the Persian Empire, which stretched from Asia Minor to the border of India. It was one of the richest lands in ancient times, and was protected by the most feared and powerful army in the world. Alexander's army met the Persian army three times and won each by launching daring attacks. In each battle Darius managed to escape. Darius was finally assassinated by his own troops.
