The movie opens at a medieval jousting tournament — and the crowd starts stomping and clapping to Queen's 1977 anthem. It's a deliberate anachronism: the director wanted a modern audience to feel what a tournament felt like to the people in the stands, the way a big game feels today.
Real tournaments were the sporting events of the Middle Ages: knights competed for prize money, fame and the attention of the crowd, and heralds hyped up the riders much like announcers do now. Ask students: what's accurate here, and what's 2001 dressed up as 1370?
